is PhD compulsary to become a researcher/scientist?

Hi Mr Vinod,

Not really… there were plenty of scientists who did not have a PhD (Elon Musk -scientist, inventor and entrepreneur does not have one)… but the modern trend is such, that to get a stable job in research, you inevitably require a PhD… in fact you do not require a doctoral degree to be an expert in a field… you just need to have an excellent understanding of that field.

On paper there are no formal qualifications for being a scientist. Most of my publications are on topics for which I have no formal qualifications.

Now the downside. It is practically impossible to get a university job without a PhD. That cuts out a major means of making a living. You can get a job in a government research lab or in private enterprise without a PhD but there are not many such jobs.

The big drawback to science as a career is that there is no such thing as private practice unlike medicine and vet so if you do not have some kind of institutional employment you are stuffed.
